MELONBALL is the husband and wife songwriting/performing team of Steve and Stephanie Gold, who have successfully collaborated for over 25 years, touring throughout the country as performers and educators. As Artists-In-Residence in the schools, they teach the elements of popular songwriting with the focus on creating songs from real life experience. The Golds have written music for film, television and major recording artists ranging from Mickey Mouse to Sister Sledge to Sarah Vaughn. Melonball's first release in 1995, "Land of the Diamond Sun" was a collection of original songs for children and it received national acclaim from both educators and family-oriented publications. Songs from "Land of the Diamond Sun" are still being played on airline family-channel playlists all around the world.

STEVE GOLD has been a composer and performer all his life. He majored in arranging and composition at Berklee College in Boston, and then at Dick Grove School of Music in Los Angeles. STEPHANIE GOLD is a classically-trained pianist and composer. She studied with Marian Zarzeczna and David Sokoloff of the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. She went to college at Indiana Univeristy in Bloomington, Indiana where she majored in piano performance with a minor in theater and composition.

Melonball has been on the Roster of the Arizona Commission on the Arts for over 10 years and has a strong history of successful and smooth-running residencies. In addition to being Roster Artists, the Golds have run a small record label and publishing company, and have managed their own diverse careers as recording and performing Artists for over 25 years.

A MELONBALL ARTIST- IN - RESIDENCY

Melonball works with one class of students (25-30) at a time, through a series of 7 workshops, teaching them songwriting. The Residency has a double culmination in that the last workshop is an actual recording session, where a studio is set up and the students record their compositions for a CD that will be made available. Also, on the last day of the Residency, all the students get up on stage and perform their original songs to the school and/or the public. A sample Residency might go as follows: 1: Introduction to the roots & styles of popular songwriting 2: Lyric Writing 3: Song Form 4: Rhythm & rhyming 5: Developing the melody. Over the weekend, we record the instrumental tracks for the students’ songs, which we bring in the following week. The remaining workshops are dedicated to recording the students, and working with them on stage presence, projecting, and other performance skills. Melonball Music also addresses a number of different ARIZONA ARTS STANDARDS in Grades 1-3: Foundations and Grades 4-8 Essentials.
A Melonball residency is most recommended for grades K-6
